Floods at Mid Autumn Festival

Saturday, 7th of September

Last year we missed the Mid Autumn Festival at Company of Grace. This year we changed our appointment in the Mekong delta to be able to attend.
The sky did not look very encouraging but we hopped in a taxi anyway.

Tu Duc district is quite a way and we thought by the time we arrive the weather might have cleared up.

Sheltering under the overpass
WRONG. After the big round about in Binh Thanh district the traffic came to a crawl and then finally to a complete halt.
Pouring down rain ...

No rain coat ... no problem
Water up to 40 cm deep ...
It was pouring and we had between 30 and 40 cm of water on the road, in the adjoining businesses and houses.

After sitting in the taxi for 45 and moving only meters even the taxi driver got nervous and tried different lanes which was difficult enough. To cut a long wait and story short, after an hour and a quarter and not even half way there we decided to call it quits.

Speeding ... like a jet ski

Businesses got flooded
Making waves ...
As soon as we told the driver he was relived and crawling to the city. That is when the fun started, people on scooters and motorbikes speeding through the flood waters like jet skis.

On our way home  ... still pouring
On overpass, leaving traffic jam behind

Anyway, an hour and three quarters later we were back at the hotel. The taxi meter displayed VND 275.000 ~ which is roughly $12.50. No worries !!!

What a pity ... we were so looking forward. It is planed to visit the children an hand over the presents next week. Weather permitting ...
