Four days ago we met Tom at one of our favorite restaurants close to our hotel. One of the hawkers sold us a stubby cooler. Tom at the next table wanted a similar one, but she did not have another cooler.
That was the beginning of an interesting conversation and over the last few days we had lunch and dinner with Tom at the same restaurant. It turned out Tom is from Entebbe,Uganda. His English was perfect. He studied engineering in Mannheim, Germany. What a coincidence. We talked about a lot of interesting subjects.
Tom at the Hope School for hearing impaired children |
At one stage Tom told us the he is volunteering for the UN. Oh ... interesting. Yes, very. He currently is a FIFO volunteer for the UN in Afghanistan, in Kabul to be precise. Every six weeks he gets a week off. This time he decided to come back to Sai Gon for the second time.
You can imagine what kind of questions we asked and over the many hours we spent together we got to know TOM well. We can not talk about all the details here, but we are happy to share them with anyone who is interested.
It worked both ways. Tom had a lot of questions for us. We told him about when and why we came to Viet Nam and what we are doing. We also talked about our German background.
When we told him about going to the opening ceremony of the Hope school he was very interested. We invited him provided the Hope school would agree ... which they did. He really enjoyed it and even got a bit emotional. Later on we went back to our hotel and had lunch with Tom. What a great Christian guy. We said our good bye and hugged each other. Stay safe Tom, we will pray for you !!!
